New managers tend to adopt one of two leadership styles when they first step up, in an attempt to navigate the relationship change they experiencing with their former peers. The ‘matey manager’ is hoping people will do what they say through a sense of loyalty and friendship. The “I’m your boss now” manager is looking to mask their relative insecurity by talking a lot and being overly dictatorial.
We conduct a full autopsy on both these styles, and the climates they create, trying to extract the things we like, and need, from both, whilst ultimately looking at a third way rooted in ambitious and relentless leadership that will inspire performance, not cuddle or enforce it.
